Brothers is a 2015 short film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It was made as a proof of concept for The Witch.[1]
Synopsis[]
The story of two brothers, Tom and Jake, and their problematic relationship.
Plot[]
Two young brothers, Jake and Tom, live with their grandmother in a cabin in the countryside. They awake one morning and the younger Tom rolls a joint for the older Jake, who them smokes it. They eat their breakfast as their grandmother coughs all the while. As they attempt to round up cattle, they get into an argumnet as Tom grows sick of Jake giving him orders. Afterwards, Jake is forced to stand in the corner while their grandmother berates him and comforts Tom.
Later, the brothers practice firing their BB guns out in the nearby wood. They fashion makeshift bayonettes out of branches and tie them to their guns. They travel deeper into the wood and find a teddy bear, which they shoot at for target practice. Tom sets it back up and Jake fires at it before he has a chance to get away.
Tom chastizes Jake and Jake calls him a crybaby and tells him to set the teddy bear up again. Tom refuses and Jake threatens to shoot him if he does not follow his orders. Tom points his own gun at Jake, but lowers it when Jake asks if he will kill him. Jake calls him a crybaby bitch and Tom stabs him with the bayonet. Tom repeatedly states that he did not mean to as Jake falls to the ground and bleeds out. Tom attempts to help him, but Jake swats him away. A tearful Tom attempts to help his brother as he convulses and bleeds to death.
Tom returns to the cabin, where he is once again conforted by his grandmother.
