On 22 January, 2025 it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Robert Eggers would direct a screenplay he co-wrote with Sjón, with both of them also producing the film. Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus were also announced as executive producers, with Focus Features providing financing and distribution. It will be a werewolf-centric horror film set in 13th century England, with a script featuring dialogue true to the time period and translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English. Eggers initially planned to shoot the film in black-and-white, but will instead shoot it in color.[6] On 30 January, 2025, Jarin Blaschke confirmed in an interview with Den of Geek that he will be the film's cinematographer.[7]

On 15 July, 2025, it was reported by Variety that Aaron Taylor-Johnson would star in the film with Lily-Rose Depp also in talks to star. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films will also produce alongside Eggers and Sjón.[8]

On 17 July, 2025, Deadline reported that Willem Dafoe was in talks to join the cast.[9]
